Grammy Winner 2018: Best Latin Jazz Album

Pablo Ziegler at the Gstaad Tango Festival

Friday, May 24, the Argentinian Grammy Winner Pablo Ziegler will perform with his quartet at the 2nd Gstaad Tango Festival in Lauenen Church.

New Tango is a musical genre created by the leading Argentinian composer and bandoneon player Astor Piazzolla. He mixed influences such as Bach’s fugue technique, traditional tango and Latin jazz. The jazz influences came from Piazzolla’s long-time pianist Pablo Ziegler (79), who won the Grammy award for “Best Latin Jazz Album” in 2018, which came as a surprise to him.

On Friday, May 24 and Saturday, May 25 – on Argentina’s national holiday – Pablo Ziegler and his quartet will play ten compositions by Piazzolla and himself, including the well-known piece Oblivion (“Oblivion”). Ziegler will be accompanied by cellist Anzhe Zuo, who lives in Zurich and Gstaad and whom he met at a masterclass in Cremona in 2023, as well as Belgian bandoneon player Manu Compté and Italian double bassist Virgilio Monti, who have been playing with him in the quartet for some time. Incidentally, the bandoneon is the Argentinian version of the accordion.

Admission is free and donations will be made to the Friends of Healthcare in the Saanenland.
